Maintaining your horse’s health
Regular Dental Maintenance
Consistent dental care plays a pivotal role in ensuring the overall wellness of every horse, primarily focusing on preventive measures. It is recommended that your horse’s oral health be assessed every 6-12 months, contingent upon their age and dental history. This approach aids in promptly identifying and addressing any issues that may arise. Should you observe any dental concerns, I recommend arranging a dental examination at your earliest convenience. With motorized hand rasps at hand, I am fully equipped to conduct secure and effective routine dentistry right at your stable. Additionally, I can administer sedation if necessary, particularly for horses that might be apprehensive or restless. The majority of routine dental work and certain minor procedures, such as wolf teeth extraction, can be performed on-site. Dental radiography services are also available while on the move.
Passport and Microchip Services
Starting from 1st July 2009, it is obligatory for all horses to possess a passport and be microchipped. Failure to comply with this requirement could lead to fines of up to £5000. Microchipping forms a crucial aspect of the passport application procedure and must be executed by a certified veterinarian. I am ready to undertake the microchipping procedure for your horse and provide guidance regarding the passport application process.
Pre-Purchase Evaluations
The pre-purchase examination, also known as a PPE or vetting, involves a comprehensive clinical assessment of the horse on behalf of the potential buyer. This examination aims to evaluate veterinary aspects that could impact the horse’s suitability for its intended role. I am at your service for conducting pre-purchase examinations on your behalf.

Vaccinations
Consistent immunisations guarantee your horse’s optimal defense against contagious illnesses that can lead to severe, and occasionally life-threatening, ailments. I emphatically advise the vaccination of all equines against equine influenza and tetanus. If your intention involves participating with your horse in equestrian activities, adherence to vaccination protocols is mandated by the regulating organization. Feel free to reach out to me at office@humberequinevet.co.uk to coordinate your horse’s immunization schedule.
EQUINE INFLUENZA
Equine influenza is a highly contagious viral respiratory disease with an incubation period of one to five days, so an outbreak can spread quickly amongst your horses. The virus is spread through droplets released into the air when the infected horse coughs or sneezes, however can also be passed on through direct or indirect contact. The symptoms include high temperature, swollen airways, nasal discharge, lethargy and swollen glands. Equine influenza can weaken your horse’s immune system, leaving them vulnerable to secondary infections. Vaccination remains the most effective way of protecting your horse against equine influenza. Whether you require a first vaccination or a booster for your horse, I am available to help.
TETANUS
Horses are particularly susceptible to tetanus, a disease caused by bacteria living in the soil. The bacteria enter the body through wounds, most commonly through the sole of the foot. It then produces toxins that affect the nervous system, resulting in muscle stiffness, difficulty moving, protrusion of the third eyelid and seizures. Tetanus is often fatal, despite attempts to treat the disease. Protect your horse against tetanus by getting them vaccinated. Send me a message at office@humberequinevet.co.uk to arrange your horse’s vaccination and protect them against future infection.
EQUINE HERPES VIRUS (EHV)
Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) is a common virus in the worldwide horse population. The most common strains to infect horses are EHV1 and EHV4. EHV4 is most commonly associated with respiratory disease whilst EHV1 is more commonly associated with neurological disease and abortion.
